COW PATTY BINGO
Anyone who doesn’t like it is full of bull!

Some folks call it Bovine Bingo but here in Texas, we’re kind of partial to cow patty bingo or cow chip bingo. And even though it’s really more of a lottery than a game of bingo, we’ll keep the name because Cow Patty Lottery just doesn’t have the same ring to it!

Cow Patty bingo is a game of chance used to raise money at hundreds of rural fairs and nonprofit events around the country. It’s particularly popular in places like Texas, where charity bingo provides millions of dollars a year to the state coffers, and Cow Patty Bingo provides thousands to groups like the FFA, 40-H and other nonprofit groups around the state.

Cow Patty Bingo usually includes drawing a grid of rectangles on an enclosed land area by using chalking lines. The rectangles are then numbered and chances are sold on each cell. A cow is then released within the enclosure. When the cow lets loose with its first patty – BINGO -- a winner is declared.

There are derivatives of this game that are sometimes played with chickens or with horses in a parade. But either way it can provide the “sweet smell of success” for nonprofits trying to earn a little extra cash.

Oh, and here’s a little tip for all those players who want to holler bingo. Make sure the animal is well fed on the day of the fundraising event – it makes for a shorter game.

Some groups such as PETA has said that the game stresses out the animal. In a letter to a high school planning a Cow Patty Bingo fundraiser, PETA said “it is very demeaning to the animal.”  Additionally the group said it was bad for children who were being taught that “animals are disposable and it’s acceptable to use animals to make money.”

All we’ve got to say is that PETA is full of bull. Cow Patty Bingo has a lot of years of tradition behind it and we’ve never known one cow yet that had to get psychological help because she pooped in a square.
